Genetic testing has been created for more than two thousand different diseases which are now available for using in a clinical setting. Genetic tests can look at a single gene as most do and is used to diagnose many rare disorders like Fragile X syndrome and muscular dystrophy. Genetic tests can also look at inherited mutations as well as rare disorders. Two of the disorders that genetic testing can identify are the BRCA1 and 2 disorders that are the cause of some cancer in the ovaries and breasts in women. Though most genetic tests only test one gene they are being worked on to incorporate many genes that can affect a person’s risk of developing a life threatening disease. This can help identify more risk factors for diseases such as cancer and diabetes. Diagnosing these diseases early will put doctors on the path of helping to cure these diseases early or at least stop the symptoms from coming through preemptive medication.
Cell biology is a field that is on the rise as many people are interested in the capabilities of genes though little is known about the genetic causes of diseases. This is why there are many instances of biology in the news that indicate when a new aspect of genetics has been discovered. The researchers who study cell biology and the human genome often study different aspects of the human genome for years on end in order to get an answer about what causes a specific disease.
